Coffee cultivation in Gayo Highland was started in 1924 by the Dutch Colony. It lies on the altitude of 900 – 1700 M above sea level with rainfall rate at around 1,643 – 2,000 mm/year which is considered highly favorable for coffee plantations.
Gayo Highland is the most important area for Indonesia’s
Arabica Coffee. It is the largest Arabica coffee producing region
in the country.
It covers around 95,000 hectares, owned by about 66,000 families
of farmers. Almost 90 percent of coffee growers maintain organic
practices. The harvest period stretches from November to May

In 2017, European Union has awarded Gayo coffee with Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) status, the only product from Indonesia obtaining the PGI status, signaling that the coffee is an authentic product with superior quality.
